Any antidotes for our sick Healthcare system?

Posted to ABC Q&A on 18/8/2009
Our healthcare system is very sick, suffering from multiple internal injuries and external infections. Without fixing the internal wellbeing, additional external funding will only further nourish the cancerous “cells”.

There may not be an antidote to help cure the ailing system, but a holistic health management approach will cut-off the life support of the parasites, re-balance the skill-yin and competent-yang, unblock the care-and-treatment arteries, and flush out the good for nothing.

Home Births

Posted as “SphericalThinker” to ABC Q&A, 4/8/2009
Commenting on “Home Births”

At present, there are enough mid-wives to go round delivering babies because of economy of scale - birth at hospital.

If home birth becomes a common practice, there will be shortage of qualified mid-wives, not dissimilar to other trade / profession. Unqualified, and unethical practitioners will move in to take advantage of the uninformed and inexperienced.

There is also another legal implication. Illegal baby trade may flourish, because documents can be falsified regarding who the real parents are.

As demand of home births increases, the health insurance will likely to cover home birth. Based on risk and cost effectiveness factors, I can also foresee that the health insurance premium will increase for families or singles of child bearing age.

Outdoor Alfresco Style Dining

Many cafes extend their trading floor space to the side walk. The furniture occupies area, thus narrowing the walk way. On very busy sunny days, this hinders free flow of pedestrian traffic, and may post a safety problem.

While the side-walk Alfresco-style dining may give the city a touch of European atmosphere, the negatives may outweigh the positive. Most diners are considerate, but some leave unsightly mess of used bags, bottles, containers and cigarette butts. Side-walk diners, like many people, are concerned about the air quality they breathe, and yet they are quite contented to sit next to busy roads where unhealthy exhaust fumes are continuously emitting from motor vehicles. If the diners are smokers, they will suck in double dose of carcinogens – the tar and the exhaust particles.

Diners who choose to dine outside on very cold days should wear appropriate attire instead of using external gas heaters installed by the business owners. Most of the heat is wasted in warming up the open air, and only small proportion benefits the diners. Such inconsideration reflects on the naivety and hypocrisy of the diners on climate change and global warming argument.

I would like to call upon all authorities to ban the use of external heating devices, unless for emergency purposes, in the name of energy conservation, climate change minimisation and being a good global citizen.

Take responsibility about your fat children

This article was posted to ABC 7.30 Report at www.abc.net.au/7.30 on Posted on 5/05/2006

I'm a tax payer who is getting sick of fixing problems of people who keep blaming the society, the mass media, everyone except themselves about making their children taking drugs, speeding on the roads and killing innocent people, making them fat, etc.

In most cases, parents do have more contact hours with their children than outsiders. Why can't they look after the well being of their children better? Don't they know how to use the switch on the power point? Its a matter of turning off the TV if the parents of the fat children don't want the children to know about the Golden Arch, or the old man trying to entice the kids to eat the chook?

Probably there are a lot of readers or audience out there, just like me, would like to spend their money on themselves rather than fixing problems of irresponsible people who keep blaming others for their misbehaviour and arrogance. If they do not fix their own problems, don't expect others to fix the problems for them - well, definitely from not me!

Can aroma therapy and fragrances cause cancer?

Passive smoking causes lung cancer and petrol sniffing causes social problems. What about aroma therapy, use of air freshener and insect spray? Just because aroma therapy and air fresheners use perfumes and nice fragrances, does not mean that it is good for health. If insect spray can kill insects, surely it can have some adverse effects on our body cells!

People embrace this new age fad and technology to replace the unpleasant cigarette smoke and petrol are far too naive to say the least. These people never question whether the frangrances can cause cancer or may be addictive. Most of the fragrances are complex compounds produced artificially in the laboratories. The long term effect of inhaling these complex chemical compounds has not been studied or investigated.

If you are rational enough, concerning about whether GM food is bad for you or fat may cause heart diseases, then it is about time to ask the same question about fragrances and things that you inhale.
