Peace and Quiet for 3 Weeks 宁静的3个星期

Myself, my wife and three other good friends have just returned from an overseas trip, covering Los Angeles (USA), Alaska, Vancouver (Canada) and surrounding places of attraction. At Los Angeles, we visited Hollywood Boulevard, Disneyland, Universal Studios, Las Vegas and Grand Canyon West Rim.

After leaving Los Angeles, we travelled to Seattle (USA), boarded a ship and cruised north to Alaska stopping at Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway.

My mobile phone could not receive any messages or phone call in USA, Canada and on the ship, and it was too expensive to use Internet. I had 3 weeks of peace and quiet and did not have to worry about work!

Where will the smokers go

Where will the smokers go for their cakes or meals if smoking is banned in all indoor and outdoor compound for dining? Nowhere, of course, unless they give up their dirty, and unhealthy habit.

Healthy options for fussy eaters

Children don't like to be told just to eat fruit and vegetables. Besides fun, they want to find out more!

Let them find out the names of fruit and vegetables. Maths questions can be set about the fruit and vegetable prices, per kg or per meal, discount calculation on supermarket promotion.

Outdoor activities can include growing fruit trees and vegetables the organic way, and in biology lab by hydroponic. Combining with other sciences, children can learn about energy in joules, the chemistry of salt and sugar; classify them in terms of carbohydrate, protein, fat, acid, alkali, soluble and non-soluble fibres, various vitamins and minerals.

In English classes, children can have show-n-tell their trips to fruit and vegetable farms; present essays or short stories related to fruit and vegetables. To go further, act out in drama classes the fruit and vegetables characters.

Children should learn about the unhealthy effects of not eating enough fruit and vegetables. They should be shown pictures or documentaries on children suffering from various vitamin deficiencies, obesity; in extreme cases side effects that can lead to cancer.

Alfresco-Style Dining at Footpath Must Go

The Workplace Safety Act 2004 stipulates that all stakeholders - shopkeepers, employees, Council, diners have a duty of care to the safety of the public. To avoid potential accidents, it is only wise to keep footpath to be used as it has been designed for. It only takes one casualty, for example, a pedestrian walking out of the footpath being knocked down by a car in the process of parking at the marked bay, to cost the shopkeepers / ratepayers heaps for insurance compensation.

According to Food Standard 3.2.3, Div 2, Para 3(d), "The design and construction of food premises must to the extent that is practicable – exclude dirt, dust, fumes, smoke and other contaminants." All cafes and restaurants that offer Alfresco dining experience essentially fail the test of the Food Standards Code. Diners breathe in exhaust fumes from motor vehicles, dirt and dust blown in from the street.

300 million Chinese in China are obese

Posted to blog.people.com.cn on 23/2/2010

300 million Chinese are obese.

I am prompted to write this blog after watching a segment of an Anhui TV program on Pangpang (Fat) Troupe 胖胖艺术团. To join the troupe, one has to be over 125 kg.
Unless overweight people are victims of diseases or genetic malfunction, they should never consider and accept themselves as normal physiologically.

Our society is full of contradiction. While it is alright to compare a beautiful woman with a famous person, movie star, fairy or object, such as Jackie Kennedy, Sophia Loren, Cháng'é or flower, it is not acceptable to compare an overweight person to a fat pig.

I do not agree with the view that overweight people have to ignore or give in to other people calling them names, whether the culprit is a child or an adult. This may overcome their psychological stigma, but the root of the weight problem still exists.

Neither overweight “sufferers” be branded particularly as lazy, nor have the misconception that they are a happy bunch. Many people of any shape and size can be lazy or jovial, too.

We must respect these people as individuals having weight problem, and give them the motivation and encouragement to overcome it.

Weight is not put on or reduced overnight; it takes weeks or months. One cannot expect miracle to happen overnight or within a short time. When I feel my trousers getting tighter, I know I have to reduce my food intake.

I prefer to sacrifice some food, rather than not having a life to enjoy food at all!

Exercise hurdle for new mums

I wonder what happened before the "invention" of gym, netball, tennis, etc. Were all the women over-weight? I also wonder what Dr Lombard means by slow and tiring jobs. Is it mentally or physically slow and tiring?

Too much emphasis and credit have been given to exercise by doctors and experts, thus making it the panacea of fixing weight problems. What is lacking in the grey matter in these professionals and fanatics are commonsense and the concept of self management / discipline. Weight gain is the consequence of excess food intake. If energy requirement and dissipation are reduced, one should consume less, no matter whether the food is cheap or tempting.

I have not seen a single obese resident in any aged care home; they hardly do any exercise, and the jobs they performed are slow and tiring (by their standard). So forget about those "expert advice"; start lowering your food consumption. Walking to the toilet, getting letters from the letter box, preparing meals, washing dishes, mopping the floors, wiping the tables and floors, brushing teeth, washing face, rubbing or scrubbing body in a shower, etc. are good enough daily exercises to keep your heart pumping and oxygen flowing.
