It sounds totally illogical that any light emitted from Cecylia Kee's iPad under her pillow could disturb her sleep because it would be completely absorbed and blocked by the pillow.

There is no surprise too that she started to get bags under her eyes because of she "often uses it to read in bed or check emails." She could be reading it or checking emails throughout the night, or sleep reading?

Thank you for visiting my blog. I could not provide the proper blog address because of restriction imposed by this Comment system. I shall be posting my blog, My Weight Reduction Program - 3, on the secret key success factor by 30-10-2011, and leave it on until mid-night 31-10-2011.

Our mind has great influence over what we eat and how much we eat. We need to trick our brain that we are neither eating less than usual, nor less satisfying foods. Satisfying our brain is the psychological need. How much we eat determines how much is available for our body building and functioning. This is the physiological need. The reason why eating less alone does not guarantee reduction, is due to our mind resisting the dieting program.

Disclaimer - I am neither a medical professional nor a dietician. I am sharing this information in good faith. If in doubt, discuss this with your doctor.

Read my blog about My weight reduction program - Part 1 and Part 2 via
sinfongchanhealth.blogspot.com

This program involves only eating less. There is no loss of quality of life, but instead it helps save on food bill and gym membership fee. There are 4 simple rules -

1. If you are 10% overweight, just eat 10% less. Use your BMI as the guide.
2. There is no need for extra exercises other than what you are doing now.
3. On special occasion, just pig-out, and don't worry about the program.
4. You put on weight slowly, then expect put off weight slowly.

There is one secret key success factor - you need to satisfy both the psychological need and physiological need when consuming your food. How can this be done? That depends on whether you have the desire to find out more.

The reason why such a storm has been created is likely due to incorrect translation of the word scourge in sign language. If deafness can be cured or eradicated like polio, sign language instructors will be out of a job; hearing aid and related product industries collapsed. Get a life, can't you hear!

The best thing about living in a free country is that one is free to be gullible and waste money on supplements, quacks, shrinks, dingbats, etc. Pill popping is easier than going to shop for ingredients required for the laborious cooking; not to mention washing up. Even picking up the phone to ring for take away food and going to the restaurants are chores and a half!

Many middle-age and younger people today have too much expectation and insufficient sacrifice. They started off with expensive wedding celebration, honeymoon follow by carefree life-style - dining out, expensive alcohol, merry-making parties, more than budget-permit rental apartments, branded goods, multiple home-entertaining systems, etc. They want a career, new car, credit card, holidays and new home! They spoilt their health, not because of genetic reason, but due to their indifferent attitude towards what real life is about.

Life is about sharing and compromise. Me-ism preachers have been giving the wrong messages, and forgetting the duty and responsibility as humans on this planet are not just to live for themselves but also leave behind offspring to ensure a continual existence of human race - healthy humans to be precise.

How are the kids with older parents going to tell their friends - parents or grandparents? Will this damage their mental development? Generation gap, I argue very often is created by older generation. Another 10 or more years’ gap can mean greater difficulty in relating to them and guide them. There are always exceptions to the rules – good luck!

For goodness sake, there is a place for recreation, and a place for parenting / looking after the baby. Even a 45-minute low-impact form of exercise involving carrying a baby is bad for the mother's body and posture.

For the poor baby, 45 minutes of swaying and moment half way the height of the mother may badly affect their sense of orientation and hopefully won't damage the development of the young brain.

While many mothers do not do anything to their babies without the advice from medical professional, why are they so gullible about this without giving some thought?

Listen to common sense!

Suffers of dyslexia, Asperger syndrome, autism, ADHD, epilepsy, etc. suffer more than just the medical conditions - they don’t show physical defects like paraplegia or blindness, and therefore people around them don’t often treat them with sympathy and understanding. Knowing the medical term for their condition is a cold comfort, for it can cause more distress and intentional isolation from the other people. It is great that Henry Winkler was able to overcome his difficulty, but many “medically branded” sufferers become more demotivated in life, and live in the shadow of disability.

Where is free speech? WikiLeaks is banned then comes plain cigarette packaging. What's wrong with the Food Acts?

Obesity is a lifestyle choice, no difference from people who take up extreme sports, or practise as snake catcher.

If we are fair dinkum about teaching those who can't help themselves, then let those people who consume excess fatty foods, sugar, alcohol or anything that are classified as health hazard pay their related medical treatment out of their own pockets. The public health system and Medicare WILL not be responsible. If they can't pay, they will have to suffer due to their own stupidity.

As a marketer, I protest strongly about plain packaging. Being different is fundamental to brand / product differentiation. Do we expect more generic brand foods in every food outlet?

I don't like to see Australia to become one of those Communist countries where freedom of speech and expression are premium.

Are we going to see banning of Google? Will there be forced closure of McDonalds, Hungry Jacks or KFC unless their products are fat-reduced? Is this the end of Australian sugar and butter industries?

Please publish this comment - just to show that free speech is NOT dead!

Alcohol kills and affects more people money-wise and health-wise - physically, emotionally and psychologically. The hospital emergency and rehabilitation departments are clogged up with drink-driving and alcohol related patients. Welfare organisations have to help many to cope and deal with alcohol related abuses.

Why are there no health or risk warning messages with ghastly pictures on drink packaging? Should alcohol be sold behind counter like cigarettes? Should alcohol be banned or outlawed like cigarettes?

This is just another case of human irrationality - double standard!

Unfortunately too much emphasis is placed on paper qualification and paper shuffling. It's nice to sit in front of a computer, fill in forms, prepare reports or talk about strategies; the crux of the matter is patients lie in beds and need attention; they do not hang around the office areas.

It is true that many agency staff are not familiar with particular hospital environment, including certain crucial equipment, and lack spoken language skill.

Facts and figures, and who has done what are of no interest to the patients. Real throughput can only be achieved by real patient care, not the bright red colour at the bottom line.

Death is no laughing matter, and this is not a hoax.

Many people are careful about healthy living yet they forget about hygiene. They do not wash the vegetables and fruits before consuming them, or wash their hands after going to toilet. They walk bare-foot or wear the same shoes that have walked on dirty streets in the house, bringing all the filth from the outside to the living area. Parents allow babies to crawl on floors and carpet full of germs. It used to be homeless and lower socio-economic people that sit on footpaths or grass in public area, but now no one gives any thought about the "shit" they are sitting on. What about dirty pets in the house/beds?

People pay for organic produces that can be dirtier and more bacteria-borne than non-organic ones. No one questions about the water source of bottled water, whether it has been contaminated by someone having a bath or doing business upstream. Idiotically many people choose to put bacteria in their stomaches for good health.

After cigarette, is plain packaging of alcohol next?

Posted to Letters to Editor, Monash Weekly (1/6/2011) on 1/6/2011 at 10:41 AM (Not published)
After cigarette, is plain packaging of alcohol next?

I must stress again - I am not a smoker, and do not like the smell of cigarette smoke. Neither I nor anyone I know well has any interest in the industry or related industries.

My protest is about the fundamental right of free speech, and freedom in advertising. It is hypocritical to use cigarettes as a scapegoat, while other harmful products enjoy the freedom of damaging private and public health without governmental interference.

Many smokers do die of cancers and other diseases, but many do not. Similarly, many alcohol drinkers die of some form of cancers or diseases, too.

The effect of excessive consumption of alcohol has more detrimental effects. Once someone gets drunk, all hell breaks loose. They abuse others physically and emotionally. Once they get behind the steering wheel of a car, there is a good chance to discover them in a hospital ICU or death notices in the newspapers.

Until plain packaging comes into force, there are a lot of health warnings and ghastly pictures on the cigarette labels. There are no such warnings or pictures on cans or bottles of alcohol. If the legislators and health do-gooders are serious about saving lives and the health wellbeing of humankind, treatment of alcohol sale and promotion should be no different from that of cigarette.

So, the question is, will we see the day when plain packaging applies to alcohol?

Only if we can learn from the margarine producers and marketeers

Only if we can learn from the margarine producers and marketeers....

A friend e-mailed me an article about how bad margarine is. It begins this way:

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter.

The concluding paragraphs of the e-mail are reproduced as follows:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:
  • no flies, not even those pesky Fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
  • it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value;
  • nothing will grow on it even those teeny weeny micro-organisms will not a find a home to grow.
Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

The conclusions about margarine can also apply to salt and many other things. Neither does salt attract fruit flies, nor change if left in Steptoe's junkyard. Excessive consumption is bad, but we do need salt in the blood so that oxygen can be transported to the right places within the body.

Water has no calories or nutritional value, but it keeps your blood and you going. Do you drink spring water? Someone could be having a swim or doing some business upstream. We may even classify spring water as "organic". You probably pay a lot for Sports drink which is water with a bit of potassium salt and plenty of glucose. Squeeze some orange juice, and you will get extra natural vitamin C in the drink.

Palm oil is just as risky, and a possible cause of cervical cancer. It has been used in many products, e.g. biscuits, instant noodles, and processed foods with ingredients labelled as 'vegetable oil'.

Many colouring, food flavouring and chemicals can be bad or even toxic to the body. Without the use of these, you won't be buying the soft drink, dark soy sauce, ice cream, bakery products, etc.

Do you burn fragrant oils, put on lip sticks, or even use excessive tooth paste? These chemicals get to you blood stream, just as bad as you ingest margarine.

We can also argue that mature cheese stings like my wee, and deep frying Chau Taufo (stinking Taufo) can be smelt many streets away from the hawker stall.

Jee Yau Jah (dry fried pork fat) can't be that bad for the heart, because almost every single bit of the fat has been released and melted through the heating process.

Oil is essential for the body for lubrication and elasticity. On hot days, body produces and releases oil, coating the skin. In my opinion, this is a natural process to block off the harmful sun ray to prevent skin cancer. Yet, many people wash it away quickly with soap made up of many chemicals and some are derived from heavy metals - chemically speaking. The next stupid step is to replace the washed away oil with body lotion, which is another chemical product.

There is a Chinese saying, "eating heart is good for the heart, eating brain is good for the brain". Well, scientists have now proven that pig's heart is closest to a human heart in almost all aspects, and could be used for future heart transplant as human heart substitute. The so many trace elements and natural chemicals in offal and meat cannot be synthesised in laboratories, and therefore, it is best that we learn to eat as many edible things as possible.

Who in the right mind drink wheat grass juice or eat raw vegetables? Can a human body produce the essential enzymes like the cows or horses to break down these plant chemicals effectively?

Now many people drink Yakult just to put good bacteria in the stomach, and yet they are too frightened to eat pig's intestine - small and large intestines.

Climbing Mount Everest, sky diving, or riding on a large fairy wheel are challenges. To face those challenges, you have to remove the psychological fear and those barriers which stop you from doing it. Be adventurous with foods - just take your next step, try eating something new and don't ask what it is, just eat it! I never want to think about yogurt as curdle milk and the green stuff on cheese as mould. I prefer butter, but I also consume margarine. In fact, I am using spreadable butter, which is butter plus canola oil. For frying, I use sunflower oil, which is better than olive oil in that olive oil burns at lower temperature.

Some scientists reckon sunflower is good for the brain, but one thing for sure, it has fewer chemicals and is cheaper, and hence good for my pocket!

If we all learn from the margarine producers and marketeers, we'll be wiser and richer than what we are now!

Secret to Longevity

Secret to Longevity

There are no less than half a dozen of people telling me that I have a long life. A couple of them are professional fortune-tellers, and the others may probably possess sixth sense. Well, one person's comment about my being able to live for a long time comes from my personal doctor. After looking at my recent blood test result, he gave me a clean bill of health.

I am not a health fanatic, and do very little exercise. I eat and consume almost everything and anything. Some are considered healthy, and some are not. For whatever I eat - good or bad for my body, I eat it in moderation.

  • Offal, feet and trotters
  • chicken skin, parson's nose (bums)
  • bone cartilage, crispy fish bones and fins, shark fin
  • pork fat and crackling
  • whole milk and its products, ice cream
  • steamed/fried yum-char items
  • saturated/unsaturated oils and fats
  • leafy/non-leafy vegetables, melons, seaweed, mushrooms, fungus
  • fresh/dried/candied fruits
  • nuts, melon seeds, sunflower seeds
  • fresh/frozen/dried fish, roes, shark
  • crustacean, shell fish
  • red meat, white meat, poultry, game
  • curry with/without coconut milk
  • fried/boiled rice, fried noodles, pasta
  • plain/boutique breads
  • doughnuts, pastries, biscuits, cakes, kuehs
  • jam, vegemite, cheese spread, Logical, Pro-Activ, mayonnaise
  • cereals, wheat germ
  • fish fingers, hamburgers, pizza, fish and chips
  • water, coffee, tea, Chinese tea, fruit juices, milk, soya milk
  • bone stock soup, meat/fish/vegetable soup

We are so blessed to have such abundant food varieties in the world, and yet so many people have to turn to man-made vitamin supplements, concentrates and extracts to keep them healthy. Overdosing oneself with some of these laboratory-prepared items may cause more harm than good.

Killing you softly by carcinogenic (cancer causing) chemicals

Carcinogenic Chemicals

Many people worry about household chemicals such as detergents, air fresheners, insect sprays, fabric dyes used in clothing, curtains, carpet and furniture; environmental pollutants petrol fuels, sulphur gases, heavy metal discharge; food additives, enhancers, preservatives, colouring, essences, etc., all of which can have harmful effects on human bodies.

Have you ever spare some thoughts about the soap, toothpaste, lipsticks, lip-gloss, sunscreen lotion, hair dyes, deodorant and cosmetics, which are either in direct contact with the body parts where absorption of such chemicals readily occurs, or can be easily ingested? I always wonder whether any of these are carcinogenic!

Nano Technology - Future Weapon of Mass Destruction

Nano Technology - Future Weapon of Mass Destruction

Bird flu infection, nuclear bombs, biological agents can cause deaths and bring suffering to millions of human lives. However, this is no comparison with the power of destruction nano technology can bring about. Like many inventions throughout history - when used properly, they can benefit mankind. On the contrary, misuse of nano technology can be more lethal than any weapon of mass destruction.

No vaccination can prevent the spread of nano molecules that can even modify genetic structure; no remedy or medication can repair any irreversible damage. The only hope is to use other nano molecules to seek out the baddies and stop their progress. To say the least, I am very afraid!

If people are well enough to complain about the meals, they should be discharged from the hospital and not occupying the valuable beds. Not all hospitals serve foods as bad as described; furthermore, hospitals are not restaurants, and most people don't dine like the upper-crust with the luxury of ordering from a-la carte menu at exorbitant prices.

There are so many constraints regarding allergy, variation of texture, availability of seasonal foods at reasonable cost, staff absenteeism resulting in meals staying in equipment longer which can change the appearance of the food.

Most foods in hospitals are more nutritious than the unhealthy foods consumed by discharged patients. The fact that these people appear to be malnourish is that they lost all the kilos of the yucky fat they had been carrying while they were staying in the hospitals.

Two out of three regular judges are overweight or at least above the optimal BMI weight. In fact, one of these two may be considered beyond the overweight category. Unfortunately some of the previous contestants were bad examples, too.

The images of these people and excessively rich food cooked and presented are indirect endorsement of unhealthy eating and lifestyle. Weight related problems cost Australia dearly, but help weight loss companies and health studios making megabucks.

Since the program is not broadcast live, an analysis of nutritional facts and data of each winning dish should be displayed on screen as a mandatory condition for the program to go to air. In additon, a warning should also be issued for high fat and high sugar dish.

My weight reduction program - 2

I wanted to reduce my weight to 68kg by end of February 2011. On 1 March 2011, I achieved my target - minimum weight of 67.9kg.

You may click here to read my previous blog about my weight reduction.

In the month of March, I wanted to check out whether my weight reduction program was a goer or loser.

I relaxed my strict weight reduction program regime and consumed a bit more during some evenings and weekends, and also included snacks, ice cream and chocolate. The weight fluctuated but returned to 68.2kg. In short, the net gain for minimum weight is 0.2kg - 0.3kg. The program is definitely working.

The difference between the minimum and the maximum weight can be as much as 2.25kg for a heavy meal or after drinking a lot of fluid.

I want to lose another 2kg - 2.25kg for the month of April to the minimum weight of 66kg, which means with a tolerance of +2.25kg, I shall achieve my optimal weight of around 68kg maximum.

My weight reduction program - 2

I wanted to reduce my weight to 68kg by end of February 2011. On 1 March 2011, I achieved my target - minimum weight of 67.9kg.

My weight reduction program

My weight reduction program is a great success! I can control the amount I want to lose and by certain target date. The process is a slow and steady but works remarkably well. I broadcasted my intention and explained the logic behind the method to group of friends weeks ago so that they could bear witness. I lost about 7.5 kg in about 12 weeks, with no change in life style or quality of diet.

Target date: last weighing on 28/2/2011
Target weight: 68kg
Weight achieved: 68.1kg on 25/2/2011, I boosted the weight back by 1 kg for 2 days intentionally
Weight achieved: 68.0kg on 1/3/2011, at 4:03pm
Weight achieved: 67.9kg on 1/3/2011, at 5:30pm

I only share my weight reduction program method with people who are interested in it. There is no charge. You'll have more money in your pocket by following it!
